Glossary / Definitions
  • Abbe - An Abbe condenser is composed of two lenses and performs better than the simple, single lens condenser.
  • Achromatic - Refers to a two-element lens which offers better performance than a single element lens.
  • Coaxial Focus - Fine and coarse focus mechanisms and control knobs are located together, requiring only the movement of the fingers to reach each.
  • Condenser - Gathers light from the microscope light source and concentrates it into a cone of light that illuminates the specimen with uniform intensity over the entire viewfield.
  • Diaphragm - Helps regulate light entering the condenser.  The iris condenser uses overlapping plates that allow for almost infinite adjustments.  A disk diaphragm has sized holes drilled in the disk.
  • DIN - It stands for "Deutsche Industrie Norm".  It's an international standard of measurement.  The Observer objectives conform to this standard.
  • Mechanical Stage - A device which allows slides to be precisely manipulated with control knobs.  It is invaluable when viewing at higher magnifications.  (picture)
  • Nosepiece - Holds the objectives
  • Parfocal - The specimen remains in focus when switching between objectives.
  • Parcentric - The specimen remains in the center of the view when switching between objectives.
